His microvascular surgery training followed at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina.

He is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Indiana University School of Medicine. Services have been provided through the Congenital Hand Deformities Clinic at The Riley Children’s Hospital, where he served as founder and director from 1978 to 1995. His work with congenital deformities continues at The Indiana Hand Center. He continues to care for children with birth palsies at Riley Hospital.

Dr. Kleinman has been involved in teaching, lecturing, and administrative activities for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery since becoming an active member of both organizations in the early 1980s. In 1985, he received the coveted Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellowship Award from the ASSH. In addition to being chairman of many committees of the ASSH, he served from 2000-2003 as secretary of its Executive Council. He was an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Hand Surgery for five years, and a consultant for the Jornal for an additional five years.

He has published many peer-review journal articles, textbook chapters, and manuscripts on hand surgery, with a strong emphasis on injuries of the wrist, nerve disorders, and congenital hand deformities. He is Board-Certified in orthopaedic surgery, and continues to hold current Certificate of Additional Qualification in Surgery of the Hand (1989, 2000). Dr. Kleinman was elected to the prestigious American Orthopaedic Association in 1995, and is a charter member of the international Congenital Hand Studies Group.
