Tips For Sports Activity Safety
Whether you’re a competitive athlete or just working out regularly to stay in shape, sports activities are a great way to have fun and feel energized. But, they also carry the risk of injury. We believe that an ounce of prevention can save you a trip to the doctor or emergency room, so we’ve provided some tips that can help avoid injury.
- Prepare yourself for any type of sports activity by first warming up.
- Engage in 5-10 minutes of light exercise (such as walking, jogging, or cycling) prior to any sports activity to increase the body’s temperature and gradually elevate the heart rate.
- Stretch all major muscle groups to be used in the activity.
- Wear proper gear and equipment for your particular sport (such as pads, gloves, helmets, etc.) and ensure they fit properly.
- Cool down after sports activity to let the body recover and the heart rate decrease gradually. Stretching should be included.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Care
If you have a sports related injury you should seek medical care. The following situations require immediate attention.
- You experience a severe hand, arm, or shoulder injury caused by contact sports
- You cut your hand, arm, shoulder and cannot stop the bleeding by applying direct pressure
- You experience severe hand, arm, or shoulder pain while performing a sports related activity
- You experience a hand, arm, or shoulder injury where bone is protruding through the skin
- Swelling from a hand, arm, or shoulder injury does not subside within 24 hours
- You experience chronic hand or arm pain when performing routine sports related activity
