richard idler photoRichard S. Idler, M.D. is a Board Certified orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder disorders. Upon graduation from Dartmouth Medical School in 1975, Dr. Idler received training in general surgery at UCLA Health and Science Center, and went on to Harvard University for his orthopaedic residency. He completed a one year fellowship program in hand surgery at St. Vincent Hospital and Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Idler joined the staff of The Indiana Hand Center in July of 1983.

While actively practicing all areas of hand surgery, Dr. Idler's special interests are the management of acute trauma, reconstructive microsurgery, and sports medicine.

Dr. Idler is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Orthopaedic Association as well as an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Idler is also a member of the Editorial staff of The Journal of Hand Surgery and is on the Board of Orthopaedics Overseas. He is a member of the Board of WFYI. Dr. Idler's lectures, interest in humanitarian medicine, and adventure travel have taken him all over the world. Dr. Idler has over 57 publications and 225 lectures to his credit.

When not practicing medicine, Dr. Idler, an avid athlete and outdoor enthusiast, can often be found bicycle riding, kayaking, weight lifting or skiing. He has successfully summitted three of the five highest mountain peaks in North America. Dr. Idler holds a black belt in Shorei Kai karate.
