Hill Hastings II, M.D.
Dr. Hastings is co-inventor of the Biomet Discovery™ Elbow System, currently the most-advanced total elbow replacement system. He designed and invented, in collaboration with the AO Hand Study Group, the AO Wrist Fusion Plate, now the gold-standard method for wrist fusion. He helped develop in collaboration with the AO Hand Study Group the Distal Radius Plating System, the current AO Modular Hand Set, and the Percutaneous Screw Fixation Forceps System, which have received the AO/ASIF Innovation Prize. He consulted on the Combi Distal Radius Plating System; worked out the biomechanics of the PIP joint, which now form the basis for dynamic external fixation of the PIP joint; and researched the Axis of PIP Flexion/Extension, Results of Different Fracture-Management Methods for PIP Fracture/Dislocations, which led to current methods for handling complex PIP fracture/dislocations. He designed the Hemicondylar Hamate Resurfacing Arthroplasty, which is now widely utilized. He co investigated the vascularity of the distal radius, looking into Vascularized Techniques for Bone Grafting, Particularly to the Scaphoid, which changed the face of surgery for difficult avascular scaphoid fractures and nonunions. He developed the Lateral Approach to the Elbow for Release of Complex Contractures, followed by the Lateral Collateral Ligament-Preserving Technique, one of the gold-standard methods for surgical correction of complex elbow contractures. He developed a New Classification System for Primary Osteoarthritis of the Elbow. Dr. Hastings is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, the International College of Surgeons, as well as other local, national, and international societies.
