HAND CARE 2008: ADVANCING THE QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE THROUGH MEDICAL EDUCATION

Thursday, May 8th - Saturday, May 10th

Indianapolis Marriott Downtown – Indianapolis, Indiana

Hand Care 2008 is directed toward the practicing clinician and is presented at an intermediate level. It is recommended for occupational therapists, physical therapists, physicians, physician assistants, and nurses with a special interest in hand rehabilitation. A comprehensive format is designed around the dynamics of a team approach for total upper extremity care. The course includes a full spectrum of subjects pertaining to the upper extremity including lecture presentations with handouts and reference lists, an anatomy and splinting lab, panel discussions and exhibits. A portion of the proceeds from this course will be contributed to the American Hand Therapy Foundation (AHTF). AHTF supports the advancement of hand rehabilitation through clinical and scientific research.

Hand Care has been an Indiana Hand Center tradition since 1984. The meeting was established to share clinical knowledge with the goal of advancing the practice of hand therapy and quality of patient care both nationally and internationally.

We invite you to come, relax, enjoy the city of Indianapolis and add to your existing knowledge of the hand and upper extremity. This meeting is intended to be both educational and fun!

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Indiana State Medical Association through the joint sponsorship of St. Vincent Hospital and Health Services and the Indiana Hand Center. St. Vincent Hospital and Health Services designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. CADAVER DISSECTION ANATOMY LAB & SPLINTING LAB

SATURDAY, May 10th

Participants will rotate through individual lab stations throughout the morning. The anatomy lab will consist of cadaver dissections of the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow and shoulder. Surgeons and therapists will provide detailed information on the anatomy and highlight medical conditions or factors that could influence the course of rehabilitation. In complement to the anatomy lab there will be a splinting lab. The splinting lab will provide an opportunity for the faculty to demonstrate and fabricate custom-fabricated splints or orthoses for the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow and shoulder. Therapists will share the steps for fabricating specific splints, offer interesting splint designs, discuss HCPCS coding of the various orthoses, and address problem-solving for splinting challenges. A lab manual will be provided with illustrations of the anatomy and steps for fabricating the splints that are demonstrated.
